In advance of World Tuberculosis Day, March 24th 2008, Opera Lyra Ottawa, the World Health Organization's Stop TB Partnership and Stop TB Canada have come together in a new global awareness raising initiative Music to Stop TB.

Music to Stop TB premieres world wide at the National Arts Centre this Saturday evening with a performance of La Traviata.

Music to Stop TB is a public awareness project that draws on longstanding links between TB and opera - particularly La Traviata (Verdi) and La Boheme (Puccini), whose narratives focus on the tragic deaths of young women from TB.

Special guests attending this Saturday's performance include ambassadors representing countries facing a high burden of TB cases, Members of Parliament, tuberculosis experts, community representatives and local citizens interested in the arts and advocacy. All will gather to enjoy the opera and to learn about why the global TB crisis is an issue Canadians should care about. Melissa Phypers, Chair of Stop TB Canada, will welcome guests at a special first intermission reception.

TB remains a massive global health problem. Currently 1.6 million people die each year from TB, making it the second largest infectious killer after AIDS. Since TB is airborne, TB anywhere is TB everywhere - TB has no borders.

The Theme of World TB Day 2008 is "I am Stopping TB", to highlight the fact that everyone can make a difference in stopping the spread of tuberculosis. For example, Canadians can help by being aware of the crisis and by supporting Canadian investments in global TB control. Music to Stop TB supports this theme, as Ottawa's artistic community joins the call for awareness and action.
