Media Advisory-National Defence: Army Reserve Assembling in Petawawa for Large-scale Combat Exercise

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - July 21, 2005) - Approximately 3,500 soldiers from across Ontario will practise the skills required for modern combat and overseas peace-support operations during one of the largest military exercises held in Canada in recent years.

Called STALWART GUARDIAN 05, the exercise will run from Saturday, August 20 to Sunday, August 28 and involve all 40 of the Reserve units of Land Force Central Area (LFCA), the Army command in Ontario. Air Force, Communication, and Field Ambulance Reservists will also deploy to support the exercise.

The exercise will practise LFCA Reserve Forces in offensive operations with a view to improving the level of war-fighting professionalism within LFCA's Reserve Force. As the culmination of a year of training, Stalwart Guardian 2005 is the confirmation of the skills and cohesion of the units involved and will simulate as closely as possible actual combat operations.

As the very nature of war is changing, LFCA's Reservists are training to meet the challenges that will face them. Stalwart Guardian 2005 is designed to set the conditions for a shift toward full spectrum operations (3 Block War) during the period 2006-08. Full spectrum operations comprise an often-simultaneous combination of humanitarian assistance, stabilization and/or peace support operations, generally set within the context of a medium-intensity fighting.

Media visits and embedding during the exercise are highly encouraged. Opportunities include: airmobile assaults, raids, artillery live-fire, armoured reconnaissance, and engineer demolitions. Some of the supporting roles to the exercise include medical support, military policing, and communications.
