Media Advisory-National Defence: Visit Reserve Soldiers in Notional Afghanistan

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 16, 2007) - The army reserve in Ontario will be conducting Exercise Maple Defender in Wainwright, Alberta this year using the same facilities and scenario as the regular work up training for our army's overseas deployments. Over 1200 reservists from across Ontario will be participating. This is an opportunity to cover the local story and report on how soldiers in your community train and how they prepare for a potential overseas deployment using modern technologies to create a realistic scenario.

Media are invited for a two day visit beginning 6 a.m. August 19 to 6 p.m. August 20. Land Force Central Area will fly 20 journalists from a major center in Ontario to Wainwright. Accommodated in the forward operating base with the soldiers, media will witness platoons in a combat team context engaging in full-spectrum operations. Soldiers will be mounting a cordon and search, maintaining force protection, handling mass casualty incidents and dealing with conventional force incursions. The battlefield will be populated with an experienced cadre of civilian and soldier actors portraying villagers, elders, aid workers, local police, government officials and reporters.

Specific things you may see in Wainwright include a patrol visit on market day and a humanitarian aid convoy into a town, plus you will have an opportunity to interview soldiers who participate in this type of training on a part-time basis from your "home towns". Only 20 seats are available and reservations will be made on a first come first serve basis. Interested journalists should contact Captain Julie Misquitta before July 27 to reserve a spot on the media tour to Wainwright.
