Media Advisory: New legal opinion exposes unprecedented power shift buried in Ontario budget bill

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 25, 2012) - Fred Hahn, President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario, and legal counsel from Sack Goldblatt Mitchell LLP, will release on Monday a detailed legal assessment of the Ontario government's budget legislation, Bill 55, Schedule 28: the Government Services and Service Providers Act.

The legal opinion will show that, contrary to earlier reports, Schedule 28 is not limited in scope to Service Ontario. Instead, if passed into law, it will remove legal decision-making authority from the Legislature and turn it over to cabinet. This, Hahn and lawyer Steven Shrybman will explain, will allow back-room decisions on the sale of crown corporations from Hydro One to the LCBO, or any public service now provided by the Government of Ontario.

WHO: Fred Hahn, President, CUPE Ontario
Steven Shrybman, Partner, Sack Goldblatt Mitchell LLP
WHAT: Release of legal opinion on scope of Bill 55, Schedule 28
WHEN: 9:30 a.m., Monday, May 28, 2012
WHERE: Media Studio, Queen's Park, Toronto
