Media Advisory/NRC Plant Biotechnology Institute designated as a National Historic Chemical Landmark in honour of a Saskatchewan scientific world first

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN--(CCNMatthews - May 27, 2005) - The Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) will present NRC-PBI with a plaque recognizing the legacy of Dr. Raymond Lemieux. In 1953, Lemieux, a researcher with the NRC Prairie Regional Laboratory (now NRC-PBI), was the world's first to synthesize sucrose, an achievement so complex that it had been dubbed the "Mount Everest of organic chemistry."
