Demanding better values from Wal-Mart Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, City Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor OTTAWA--(CCNMatthews - May 5, 2005) - Canadians who shop at Wal-Mart can expect some extra attention this weekend. The Canadian Labour Congress has organized "greetings" at 43 stores across the country as a show of support for the people Wal-Mart insists "make a difference every day" - its workers.

In Ontario, actions are planned at stores in Toronto, Windsor, London, Hamilton, Kitchener, Brampton, Sudbury, Ottawa, Kingston and Thunder Bay.

On April 29, Wal-Mart closed its store in Jonquière, Quebec after workers voted to join a union - a right all working citizens have in Canada. It was the latest move by the mega-retailer to enforce the same no-union policy on Canadians that it maintains in the United States.

"Companies that do business in Canada should respect our laws, our citizens and their rights," says Ken Georgetti, President of the Canadian Labour Congress.

Georgetti says people shouldn't change any plans to visit their local Wal-Mart store on Saturday. In fact, people are encouraged to make plans to visit stores targeted for extra greeting so they can learn more about what kind of company Wal-Mart is.

"There's nothing wrong with wanting Wal-Mart to be a better place to work. In fact, more Canadians would consider shopping there once the stories about union-busting, exploiting workers and ignoring the law stop happening," he says.
