Media Advisory-Ontario Health Coalition-Urgent Call for Reform: New Report on Ontario Home Care

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2008) -

Attn: Assignment Editor

A new independent report, authored by two respected health policy experts on Ontario's home care sector will be released next Monday at Queen's Park. The report, entitled Home Care: Change We Need, presents the findings of an extensive cross-province consultation that included five public hearings across Ontario and the review of 69 written submissions and 78 oral presentations from homecare provider agencies, clients, family members, workers, unions and public interest groups. The hearings were sponsored by SEIU local 1 Canada and the Ontario Health Coalition, but the report's authors were given a mandate to write an independent report based on the hearings and their own research.

The report should be of special interest to media from the five cities in which public hearings on home care were held last spring: Toronto, Sarnia, Peterborough, Ottawa, and Thunder Bay. It will also be of interest in Hamilton - the site of massive home care protests - and other communities where longstanding non-profit agencies, such as the VON, have been pushed out of the sector. At the provincial level - the provincial government has placed a moratorium - its second moratorium on the controversial practice of competitive bidding and homecare privatization across Ontario. It is expected to reveal its intentions regarding the sector soon.

In 2005/2006 649,244 Ontarians received home care and almost 26 million visits/hours of home care were provided. On any given day, about 185,000 Ontarians receive home care.
