VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Feb. 22, 2014) - MEDIA ALERT: Our Place will open its doors today at 11:30 AM to offer shelter from the storm for Greater Victoria's most vulnerable as snow falls on the city.
"This is when those without a roof over their heads or a warm place to huddle need us most. Extreme weather can present a substantial threat to the life or health of people living on the street, " says Don Evans, Executive Director.
Our Place is normally open for lunch on Saturdays. Today Lions Club volunteers raised money to provide the lunch and will be helping serve. Due to the snow and cold, the inner-city community centre will bring in extra volunteers and staff to keep its doors open all day and night, serving coffee, a hot meal - and providing a warm place to dry off and sleep.
Our Place is a community centre serving Greater Victoria's working poor, the impoverished elderly, individuals with mental health and physical challenges and the homeless. It provides 45 transitional housing units, over 1,200 meals per day, hot showers, free clothing, counseling and outreach services. Most importantly, it provides a sense of hope and belonging to our neighbours in need.
