TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 18, 2013) - Ten socially-innovative enterprises formed by current students and recent graduates of Ontario universities and colleges will compete for one of four $20,000 prizes in Ontario Centres of Excellence's Social Enterprise Student Competition.
But winning the contest won't be easy. In addition to having a great business idea, the finalists will have to impress a panel of judges with a three-minute 'Dragon's Den'-style pitch.
"We've seen some terrific ideas come forward as a result of this contest," said Dr. Tom Corr, president and CEO of Ontario Centres of Excellence. "Not only are they great business proposals, they are products and services that could make a positive difference in people's lives."
The 10 finalists were selected from more than 40 entries and represent a wide range of socially-innovative enterprises. Four of the finalists will each win $20,000 to help their business develop and grow.
Chosen by an internal review panel based on the content of a short video submission, the finalists were paired with an OCE business mentor and an advisor from MaRS Discovery District to create a business plan and develop a pitch.
This is the second year for the competition. Last year, in a slightly different format, University of Toronto Civil Engineering PhD candidate Heather Wray took the top prize of $25,000 for her business Rooftop Gardens Inc.
WHAT: Ontario Centres of Excellence Social Enterprise Student pitch competition
WHEN: Thursday, March 21, 2013
- 9:30 a.m. - Pitch competition begins (each team has three minutes to present with two minutes for questions from judges).
- 11 a.m. - Judges convene and there's an opportunity to tour the Social Innovation Showcase.
- 11:30 a.m. - Winners announced.

Emily Peat, University of Waterloo
EcoPlace Organics supports local certified organic farms by improving local food distribution networks. The business was created by 21-year-old Emily Peat from London, Ontario, a 4th year civil engineering student at the University of Waterloo. EcoPlace Organics is building a grocery store on wheels to sell local organic foods to a niche market of young families.

Waterloo Banking Project
