Media Advisory: PPCLI Memorial Baton Arrives at Queen's Park


TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 3, 2014) - Media are invited to a special event on September 6, 2014 when soldiers of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) Memorial Baton Relay (MBR) team arrive at Queen's Park.

When: Saturday, September 6, 2014 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Where: West on Wellesley Street West going to Queen's Park.

What: The Memorial Baton will be carried by MBR members and the public from Cpl Dyer's gravesite to Queen's Park at the Veteran's Memorial Wall. The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Colonel in Chief of the PPCLI will participate in the service with the Speaker of the House, Provincial and Military VIPs.

The Memorial Baton Relay (MBR) is a team of soldiers running with a baton containing the names of 1,866 PPCLI members who have fallen in active service to Canada. The MBR team is re-tracing the symbolic route taken by the Originals as they marshaled for service in 1914 on the eve of the First World War. The Memorial Baton departed Edmonton on August 10, 2014, and is being relayed to Ottawa where it will arrive on September 18, 2014.

The PPCLI will also host a Centennial Display that is open to the public at Queen's Park between 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. The Centennial Displays highlight a century of service to Canada by showcasing military vehicles, weapons, equipment and uniforms worn by PPCLI soldiers from 1914 to modern day. A mobile museum will feature Regimental artefacts. Children's activities will include an inflatable obstacle course, face painting, balloons and a magic show.

Interviews: Soldiers will be available for interviews at Queen's Park near the military displays.
