WINGHAM, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - April 4, 2014) - Staff, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), will rally at the Wingham and District Hospital (270 Carling Terrace, Wingham, Ontario) on Monday, April 7, at noon, to protest cuts to services and patient care.
Wingham hospital is facing a deficit of over $700,000 and eliminating that deficit will have a very significant impact on services and area residents accessing care locally.
Small rural hospitals like Wingham are hard hit by recent changes to provincial funding. Skyrocketing costs for drugs and medical equipment - which are the wholly privatized pockets of the health system - are affecting hospital budgets.
Ontario has the fewest acute care hospital beds-to-population of any province in Ontario or any country in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The Ontario Council of Hospital Unions (OCHU) has just released a major study of the impact on hospital patients following 20 years of cutbacks.
