Media Advisory: Rally to Save Urban Affairs Library Set for Tuesday, February 22

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 17, 2011) - A rally to save the Urban Affairs Library at Metro Hall has been called by the Toronto Public Library Workers Union (TPLWU), Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 4948.

"On Wednesday, February 23, Toronto City Council will vote on a Budget Committee recommendation to close the Urban Affairs Library at Metro Hall," explained Maureen O'Reilly, president of the Toronto Public Library Workers Union, CUPE Local 4948. "The community, staff, researchers, and students rely on this library. Circulation at the Urban Affairs Library has increased by no less than 61 per cent since 2009 with 111,625 people visiting this specialized library in 2010.

"The closure of the Urban Affairs Library would diminish access to the unique urban affairs collection and be a significant loss to the City of Toronto.

"In addition to the closure of the Urban Affairs Library, the City of Toronto Budget Committee is recommending further cuts to library staffing. Since 1998, 10% of library staff have been cut, affecting the quality of library service and programming that makes the Toronto Public Library a world-class public institution," O'Reilly concluded.
