VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - April 20, 2007) - Canadian Labour Congress President Ken Georgetti will launch the CLC's Better Choice pre-federal election campaign on Friday, April 20 with a kickoff at Vancouver International Airport - where more than 700 skilled trade aerospace jobs will be lost at Air Canada starting in June.

The Better Choice campaign helps the CLC's 3.2 million members know where politicians and political parties stand on issues that are key to workers, including protecting jobs like those being lost at the airport. The pre-election campaign will run through April and May.

Georgetti will be joined at the news conference by Air Canada workers losing their jobs, who are members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Lodge 764, and by David Ritchie, General Vice-President, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, and Jim Coller, IAM&AW District 140 President.

Air Canada Technical Services announced in March that 700 of 1,000 aerospace employees in Richmond will be laid off starting in June after a maintenance contract for Boeing 767s with Delta Airlines was terminated and the work moved to Hong Kong. Air Canada has also announced it will be buying majority ownership in an aircraft maintenance facility in El Salvador and IAM&AW has charged that Air Canada is exporting jobs from this country.

News Conference: IAM&AW, Lodge 764 office - 7980 River Road,
Richmond (from Vancouver go south on No. 3 Road,
right on Cambie, right on River Road), at 1:30
p.m. Friday, April 20.

Photo Opportunity: Georgetti, Ritchie and Coller will also be handing
out Better Choice information to workers outside
Air Canada Technical Services (ACTS) at their
shift change at 2:45 p.m.

Spokespersons: Ken Georgetti, President, Canadian Labour Congress

BETTER CHOICE CAMPAIGN - Background Information

The Better Choice campaign encourages working people to ask politicians where they stand on what matters most to working families, then to vote for the party that supports them.

BETTER CHOICE is the Canadian Labour Congress political issues campaign encouraging working people to ask politicians where they stand on what matters most to working families, then to vote for the party that supports them.

BETTER CHOICE focuses on five issues that could make a real difference in people's lives if they were dealt with by those who are elected to Parliament. Those issues are:

- JOBS - protecting jobs and wages for working people.

- TRAINING and EDUCATION - creating skills and training opportunities for workers and their children.

- PENSIONS - making sure that people get the pensions that they have earned.

- PHARMACARE - making prescription drugs more affordable.

- EARLY LEARNING - ensuring quality child care and early learning opportunities for workers and their kids.

Executive Officers of the Canadian Labour Congress are fanning out across the country in April and May to take the BETTER CHOICE message to working people.

BETTER CHOICE information is also available at www.betterchoice.ca.
