Media Advisory: Senator Yonah Martin Visits Korea to Commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Recapture of Seoul

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 24, 2010) - On Sunday, September 26, the Honourable Yonah Martin, Senator for British Columbia, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), will depart for Korea to attend memorial events focused on the 60th anniversary of the recapture of Seoul. The memorials are the keystone event of a year-long commemorative and educational program organized by the Republic of Korea.

Senator Martin will attend various commemorative events while in South Korea:

From 1950 to 1953, more than 26,000 Canadians served in Korea—working to restore peace and stability to the area. On July 27, 1953, the Korean War Armistice was signed, ending three years of fighting. Canadians remained on the Korean Peninsula in a peacekeeping capacity until 1957. In total, 516 brave young Canadians made the ultimate sacrifice while serving with the United Nations forces.
