Media Advisory: Senators launch 2012-13 Sens@School campaign on Tuesday at Pope John XXIII School

Annual launch expected to feature a visit by the NHL's most celebrated trophy

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 29, 2012) - On Tuesday, Oct. 30, Sens Foundation president Danielle Robinson will be joined by Ottawa Senators ambassador of fun Spartacat to officially launch this year's Sens@School program at Nepean's Pope John XXIII School.

In partnership with the Sens Foundation, Sens@School is an online curriculum based educational program for students in Grades 1 to 6 that combines hockey and team-based lesson plans and activities. The objective of the program is to enhance the learning skills of elementary school students within eastern Ontario and western Quebec, while promoting the value of healthy living, by providing a cross-curricular resource that utilizes the sport of hockey as relevant and related examples to teach the curriculum. The program provides a focus on health and physical education, nutrition, literacy and mathematics. In addition to curriculum support, teachers who register for the program receive access to exclusive activities, events and contests.

For the first time, this year's program will incorporate two different SMART board lesson plans (including one on the history of Lord Stanley's Cup). These plans are interactive and incorporate photos, video, audio and text into the lesson, in addition to featuring interactive components designed to encourage student participation while learning.

To date, more than 1,100 classes across eastern Ontario and western Quebec have registered for the Sens@School program, representing more than 46,000 students. Scotiabank, a proud sponsor of the Read to Succeed component of Sens@School will provide each Pope John XXIII student with street hockey-related items in recognition of this year's program launch.
