Media Advisory: Spirit of Canada Welcomes Toronto City Mission

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 15, 2008) -

Attention: News and Assignment Editors

Derek Hatfield, Canada's premiere offshore racer will be hosting a sailing night on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the Port Credit Yacht Club for friends and youth of the Toronto City Mission. A select few will be offered this once in a lifetime opportunity to not only experience sailing but to sail on the Spirit of Canada.

Derek Hatfield will be sailing in the Vendee Globe 2008 - a single-handed non-stop race around the world. Skippers are both captain and crew, totally responsible for their own performance and survival. On November 9, 2008, Hatfield, 56, will be the only Canadian competing in the race. The race takes place every four years starting in Les Sables d'Olonne, France, rounding Cape of Good Hope at the bottom of South Africa, entering the Indian Ocean, then the Southern Ocean, rounding Cape Horn, and finishing back in France in the spring of 2009. When you put into perspective the fact that 3000 people have climbed Mount Everest and less than 200 have ever sailed around the world alone, this truly is an exciting opportunity for the youth of Toronto City Mission.

Andrew Schell, Executive Director of Toronto City Mission states: "Derek and Patianne are friends of Toronto City Mission and wanted to contribute to the work we do, and generously offered to host a sailing night on our behalf." Toronto City Mission is committed to breaking the cycles of poverty by going where the need is greatest and partnering with local churches and organizations in order to provide programming targeted at eliminating poverty. There are thirteen 'at-risk' neighbourhoods in Toronto, identified in the study of "Poverty by Postal Code", released in the spring of 2005. Toronto City Mission currently works in three of those areas and in two additional areas that also need its programs; it is their goal to expand into ten additional locations across the city.
