Media Advisory/The Governor General Opens National Conference on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 13, 2007) - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will deliver opening remarks at a conference to mark the 25th anniversary of Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The two-day conference, entitled "Canadian Rights and Freedoms: 25 Years under the Charter", will take place on April 16 and 17, 2007, at the University of Ottawa. The Association for Canadian Studies, in conjunction with the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law (Civil Law Section), has invited some of Canada's leading academics, jurists, former and current elected officials, and community organizations to discuss the influence of the Charter on Canadian identity, social rights, governance and globalization.
