OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 2, 2011) - His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will take part in the announcement of this year's laureates of the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards, on Thursday, March 3, 2011, at 10:00 a.m., in Toronto.

As patron of the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards Foundation, His Excellency will address laureates and guests gathered for the announcement at the Glenn Gould Studio.

About the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards:

The Governor General's Performing Arts Awards were created in 1992, under the auspices of the late Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn (1934-2002), former governor general of Canada. The awards are administered by the Governor General's Performing Arts Award Foundation.

Each year, the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards for Lifetime Artistic Achievement are presented to exceptional Canadians whose extraordinary work has contributed significantly to the enrichment of Canada's cultural scene in such categories as theatre, dance, classical music, popular music, film and broadcasting. Recipients of this award are nominated by members of the general public.

As part of the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards, two complementary awards are also conferred each year:

The Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Voluntarism in the Performing Arts recognizes outstanding contribution by an individual or group in voluntary service to the performing arts in Canada. The recipient of this award is also nominated by members of the general public.

The National Arts Centre (NAC) Award recognizes the work by an individual artist or company in the past performance year. Recipients of this award are selected by the NAC Board of Trustees from a list of candidates proposed by a nominating committee of NAC programmers.
