Media Advisory: Town of Bradford Saves a Giant Tiger!

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 31, 2012) - In the world of retailing, this overwhelming outpouring of town love for the local community icon Giant Tiger is unprecedented" says Lauren Moir, Vice President of Marketing at Giant Tiger Stores Limited.

"We have received over 1500 letters and signatures to date from the residents of Bradford with heartfelt comments such as:

"The loss of Giant Tiger would be felt by our whole community"
"Please keep our downtown alive!" "We Shop Canadian!"
"So nice compared to big box stores" "We need our Canadian store"
"Do not close I need the bargains" "Everything I wear is from GT, what will I do?"

"This speaks directly to the kind of local grass roots retailing that Giant Tiger is famous for. Community is at the heart of the Giant Tiger brand and when the community of Bradford rallied like this, we were more than happy to listen, adapt and assist in any way we can to help the residents make it work."

"Giant Tiger is known for its community work" says Lauren Moir. "More than any other retailer, Giant Tiger becomes part of the DNA of a town. Giant Tiger's stores, for the vast majority, are locally owned; our owners live in the communities they serve, their children go to the schools and play on the local teams - it is their home. Giant Tiger connects local communities across Canada. Community giving is simply our thanks to the customers who support us when they have so many choices out there."

"Mayor Doug White and Council Members for Bradford asked us to postpone the closing so they could show us that retailing in the downtown core is not only viable but also thriving" says Greg Farrell, President and COO at Giant Tiger Stores Limited. "Therefore today we are very pleased to announce that we will keep the store opened until the end of January 2013 in order to support the community that has supported us. If we see the customer count and buying patterns are back to where they were in 2009 we will continue to call Bradford home."

Mayor White was thrilled with the news from Giant Tiger. "We are very grateful to the senior executives at Giant Tiger who listened to us at our meeting in Ottawa and who listened to the collective voice of Giant Tiger patrons" he said. "Giant Tiger has responded to our ask, now the Town's residents must do their part to ensure that 'The Tiger' is a viable retailer for the long haul."

Bradford has been a good location for Giant Tiger for many years and we thank everyone for that. However over the last few years the store sales and traffic have declined substantially. Our company has, and will continue, to keep costs down to deliver the lowest prices to our customers and that requires a modest profit model remain viable, therefore the difficult decision was made to close the Bradford store as of September 28, 2012.

So how can we all make this work? We simply ask that everyone in Bradford take advantage of the amazingly low prices that Giant Tiger is known for. Shop for all your fashion and home fashion needs and discover the style and trend we call GT CHIC…looking great for less!

Again, many thanks to all of the residents who took the time to reach out and say "we can make this work", as we believe it too. Join us, Mayor Doug White and other Bradford town representatives at our "Grand Staying Open Event" on Saturday, September 29, 2012!
