Media Advisory: TTC and Toronto Police Service Launch New Safety Campaign

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 12, 2007) - In an effort to inform the public about the importance of transit safety, the Toronto Transit Commission, in partnership with the Toronto Police Service, will hold a streetcar ride-along for the news media on Monday, July 16 at 9:30 a.m.

The ride-a-long will begin at the TTC's Hillcrest Complex, with comments from TTC Chair Adam Giambrone and Toronto Police Service Inspector Len Faul. The media and community leaders will then board a streetcar for a trip downtown, at which time, TTC and Police officials will point out various important issues as they occur randomly. These issues include the following:

- motorists not stopping for open streetcar doors

- transit traffic/pedestrian concerns

- vehicle parked in bus spaces/service stops

- vehicles parked too close to Wheel-Trans vehicles

- vehicles not yielding to buses

- proper methods for passengers boarding or exiting streetcars

Following the ride-Along, two staged events will be set up and available for the media to record. Toronto Police Service will conduct a week long enforcement blitz.
