OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 16, 2011) - On Saturday September 17th at 10 AM sharp, local farmers and restaurants will be facing off in a heated competition of homemade tourtière. Similar to old country fairs, seven of the Vanier Farmers Market and participating restaurants will be preparing their own secret recipes and competing for first place. The event takes place in the Scotiabank parking lot at the corner of Hannah and Montreal Road.

Restaurants participating include award winning meat pie maker, Bobby's Table, Farbs Kitchen and Wine bar and Maison Baguettes, Etc., Local farms are Bearbrook Games Meats, Inc., Bergerie RCC Sheep Farm, Ferme Älaska, Ferme Bonne Mine, Hall's Apple Market, Island Spice, Knock Out Cattle Co. and the Wabano Centre.

"A few weeks ago during a chef cook-off event at the market, Bill Dicks of Bobby's Table challenged farmers and restaurants to this very first tourtière competition, explains Mark Kaluski, chair of the Vanier Farmers Market and Director on the Board of Management of the Vanier BIA. "The response was unanimous. Everyone agreed to the challenge."

The Tourtière Competition is just another type of event that creates community spirit while allowing our residents the opportunity to buy local. The Vanier Farmers Market is in its 4th year and its popularity has been growing in leaps and bounds. An average of 600 residents mostly regulars, frequent the market weekly.

Judging of the tourtières will be done by local celebrities such as Ron Eade, Food Editor for the Ottawa Citizen and Pierre Jury, Food Critic for LeDroit. Councillor Mathieu Fleury, will also be one of the judges that day. "I feel honoured to judge this event. I know it will be a tough job as the competition will be fierce. Everyone of these participants will make their best pie ever!"

The Tourtière Competition is sponsored by the Quartier Vanier Merchants Association (BIA). Established in 1985, the BIA represents 350 businesses located along Beechwood, Montreal and McArthur mainstreets.
