Media Advisory/Veterans Affairs Canada: Widow of Veteran Charles Nevin Gillespie to Receive Memorial Cross

ST. GEORGE, NEW-BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - May 16, 2008) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, will present the Memorial Cross to Maxine Gillespie, widow of Veteran Charles Nevin Gillespie. Mr. Gillespie passed away on November 30, 2007 as a result of injuries sustained while serving during the Second World War. Family and friends of Mr. Gillespie will be joined by local Veterans and dignitaries.

The Memorial Cross, often referred to as the Silver Cross, was created in 1919 to commemorate the dead of the First World War. It has historically been awarded to mothers and widows, or their eldest surviving next of kin, of Canadian Forces members who died on active duty or whose death was consequently attributed to such duty.
