Media Advisory: Volunteers from Giant Tiger Put Down Their Pencils and Pick Up Their Hammers to Help Habitat for Humanity

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 1, 2011) - Workboots and hard hats are not usually part of their office wardrobe, but for 18 Giant Tiger volunteers, that will change this week. On November 1, 2 and 3, 2011, Giant Tiger staff will be offering assistance with Habitat for Humanity's next project – a retrofit on Hampstead Place in Ottawa, ON.

"What a great opportunity to offer hands-on assistance!" says Andy Gross, President and CEO of Giant Tiger Stores Limited. "It is in our nature to help and this is just another way that we can offer assistance to our customers – by supporting an organization that brings help to members of the communities we serve. Everyone should have a roof over their head and a place to call home. I will be there myself for one of the build days and can't wait to jump in."

Habitat for Humanity's mission is to ensure that everyone has a safe and decent place to live by building affordable housing with the help of volunteers and community partners such as Giant Tiger. They broke ground in Canada in 1985 and now, each year, about 50,000 volunteers work with 72 Habitat for Humanity affiliates nationwide.

Donna Hicks, Habitat NCR CEO, is thrilled. "Giant Tiger is our neighbour and we were so happy when they agreed to come on board to help with a very special project. They will be making a bungalow near CHEO totally accessible for a family of 7 with a young boy in a wheelchair."

Habitat for Humanity needs volunteers. To register, please contact the Ottawa affiliate at 170 - 2370 Walkley Rd, Ottawa, Ontario K1G 4H9 - communications@habitatncr.com - Phone: (613) 749-9950 ext. 224. Go to www.habitat.ca for more details.
