Media Advisory/Want to stimulate Nova Scotia economy? Dramatically expand child care: report

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Dec. 14, 2011) - CUPE Nova Scotia will be holding a news conference at the Provincial Legislature (main floor foyer) at 11:30 am Thursday, December 15.

Canada's largest child care union will be releasing a new report by leading economist Robert Fairholm which shows the single most effective economic development tool available to the Nova Scotia government is a dramatic expansion of child care services.

While studies like this have been conducted at a national level in Canada, this is the first study of its kind for Nova Scotia.

Speakers include:

  • Doris Gallant, Early Childhood Educator at St. Joseph's Children's Centre and President of CUPE Local 4745
  • Mike McNeil, Vice President CUPE Nova Scotia
  • Michelle Cohen, CUPE Equality Representative

(ATTENTION ASSIGNMENT/PHOTO EDITORS: A class of children from one of the downtown CUPE child care centres will be in attendance at the news conference.)

Community Services Minister Denise Peterson-Rafuse will also be in attendance and will make some brief remarks.
