Media Advisory: Workshop on Aquatic Invasive Species in Quebec

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Oct. 23, 2007) - From October 24 to 26, 2007, in the Magdalen Islands, a workshop organized by Fisheries and Oceans Canada will bring together some fifty representatives of government and non-governmental organizations concerned with the issue of aquatic invasive species. The meeting will enable participants to put the finishing touches on action plans to deal with aquatic invasive species in the marine environment in Quebec.

During the workshop, participants from the coastal area of Quebec, as well as specialists from the Maritimes, will review actions taken over the last few years and will take stock of the changes in the most worrisome species in the marine section of the St. Lawrence. At the same time, they will share their knowledge and experience and will work to implement an effective common approach to limit the introduction and propagation of aquatic invasive species in the region.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is very actively addressing the issue of aquatic invasive species in the marine environment in Quebec, in particular in the Magdalen Islands, where the latest cases of the introduction of such species have been reported. In addition to raising public awareness of the phenomenon, the Department has set up a warning/alert system in the Islands bringing together many community users. In addition, it is constantly doing scientific monitoring to detect new aquatic invasive species and their propagation in the coastal waters of the Magdalen Islands.

Spokespersons will be available, on site or by telephone, to answer journalists' questions.
