Media Advisory: Wrap-up of the First International Conference on Violence Against Women

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 24, 2006) - The first International Conference on Violence against women (www.criviff.qc.ca/conference) will welcome today Ms. Carole Theberge, minister de la Famille, des Aines et de la Condition feminine (Quebec Government), who will give a speech at the closing ceremony. Ms. Theberge's participation will be followed by the Conference wrap-up presented by Ms. Dominique Damant, director of the Interdisciplinary Research Center on Family Violence and Violence against Women (CRI-VIFF). The CRI-VIFF organized this Conference being held in Montreal since last Sunday, in order to discuss different contexts of violence and their impacts on women, as well as the diverse social responses developed until now. The media are also invited to attend a round table earlier this afternoon where possible future solutions will be discussed.

The CRI-VIFF was created following the 1989 events at Ecole polytechnique, Universite de Montreal, when 14 young women were murdered. Its structure and functioning are based on parity between academic partners (Universite de Montreal and Universite Laval) and practitioner partners (Association quebecoise d'etablissements de sante et de services sociaux (AQESSS) and Relais-femmes).
