Media Alert: Traumatic Brain Injury Legal Commentator Available

House of Representatives Concussion Hearing: New York City

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - May 23, 2010) -  New York attorney Michael V. Kaplen, a nationally recognized legal expert on traumatic brain injury, past Chair of the American Association for Justice Traumatic Brain Injury Litigation Group and three term President of the Brain Injury Association of New York State, is available to discuss the issues of sports concussions and the silent epidemic of brain injury in the United States.

Kaplen currently serves as the Chair of the New York State Traumatic Brain Injury Services Coordinating Council, created by the New York State legislature to advise the Commissioner of Health on programs and initiatives to assist victims of brain trauma. He is a frequent lecturer to medical and legal groups on the public policy implications of brain trauma. He lectures at The George Washington University Traumatic Brain Injury masters program and is on the faulty of Touro College, Graduate School of Psychology. Kaplen is the author of the nationally recognized Traumatic Brain Injury News and Information Blog, www.braininjury.blogs.com and is certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys.

According to brain injury attorney Kaplen, "There is nothing mild about a mild brain injury; all brain injuries must be taken seriously." Kaplen has seen firsthand the tragic and lifelong consequences that develop following a traumatic brain injury. "You can never take a vacation from brain damage" says Kaplen.

In the past, Kaplen has been an outspoken critic of the manner in which professional sports teams handle players with concussions. He has demanded that strict and consistent criteria be established to prevent those who have sustained a concussion or a suspected concussion, from returning to play both, in the same game, and subsequently, until they are medically cleared. He tirelessly advocates for educational programs to teach, athletes, trainers, coaches, school officials and parents about the dangers and life long consequences of brain injury. "When in doubt, keep them out" should be the slogan according to Kaplen.

Kaplen is available to discuss the issues of brain injury and concussions with the media in advance of the hearing to be conducted in New York City by the House Judiciary Committee investigating concussions in the NFL.
