Media Release: Coast Capital Savings Named Among 50 Best Employers in Canada

SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 3, 2007) - Coast Capital Savings has been listed among the 50 Best Employers in Canada by Hewitt Associates.

The award marks the fourth year the credit union has received the distinction.

"This is a great start to the New Year," said Ken Hahn, Coast Capital Savings senior vice president, human resources. "I'd like to acknowledge and thank our staff for rating us as one of the best employers Canada."

The credit union ranked 17th in Canada this year, marking a significant improvement from its position last year in 39th place on the list.

Survey responses from over 100,000 Canadian employees at nearly 120 organizations determined this year's ranking, with additional input from over 2,000 leaders and human resources professionals.

"When we measure engagement, we're not simply determining whether employees are happy or loyal," said Neil Crawford, leader of Hewitt's Best Employers in Canada study. "We're gauging the emotional and intellectual commitment employees demonstrate for the organization for which they work. If employees feel a strong commitment, they're likely to speak positively about their employer to others, stay with the organization, and do all they can to help it achieve its business goals."

Coast Capital Savings has 1,974 employees, and is Canada's second largest credit union with $8.2 billion in assets, 340,000 members and 49 branches across the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. The credit union was the first full-service financial institution to introduce free chequing in Canada.

"We recognize that employee performance plays a huge role in the success of the credit union and know that our employees are the credit union's most important assets," said Hahn. "That's why we provide programs for our employees aimed to create a desirable workplace, and we continually strive to ensure the tools and incentives available to our staff effectively help them realize their career and personal goals."

He added that Coast Capital Savings employees are regularly asked if the benefits offered to them are helpful, in order to better facilitate their needs.

"The results include a generous range of staff loans and banking benefits, a self-funded vacation program that provides employees with additional paid vacation time, and flexible compressed work schedules," said Hahn. "Each staff member sees and feels a connection between their daily contributions and the success of our organization. In turn, we are able to deliver innovative products like The Free Chequing, Free Debit and More Account, as well as No-Worry Mortgages."

Providing employees with a great workplace also results in great customer service, he explained.

"Coast Capital Savings customers also benefit indirectly from this positive workplace environment, and express their increased satisfaction in our Annual Member Survey," said Hahn. This year, Coast Capital Savings scored 87%, the highest overall satisfaction rating among credit unions.

The financial institution received additional recognition in 2006 with the YWCA of Vancouver Women of Distinction Innovative Workplace Award for providing a supportive and progressive work environment, and was named a national leader in corporate citizenship in the financial services industry for the third consecutive year by Imagine Canada.
