Time: 11.30am - 2.30pm
Place: Nationwide Building Society, Nationwide House, Pipers Way, Swindon

Nationwide will be marking World Environment Day (5 June 2005) with a day of celebrations at its head office in Swindon on Tuesday 7 June. From ecological 'foot-printing' to examining energy efficiency in the home and from willow sculpture to eco-friendly cars, Nationwide employees will have the opportunity to find out more about how to help the environment.

At the centre of the many activities, including speakers, workshops and stands, Nationwide will be asking its employees to make their own personal environmental pledge. Each written pledge will be pinned together to make a large tree, to demonstrate how the combination of small changes in behaviour can add up to real and significant environmental benefits.

Nationwide is also the main corporate sponsor of World Environment Day and is working closely with the Environment Agency, to ensure that World Environment Day is a high-profile success across the whole of the UK.

The Rt. Hon. Margaret Beckett MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, commenting on Nationwide's involvement, said: "I am pleased to endorse the events you have planned for World Environment Day and am encouraged to see that your commitment to the day is mirrored by your commitment to improve your own organisational performance. I welcome the work you are doing with the Environment Agency to encourage individual contributions to a cleaner, greener future."

Andrew Litchfield, head of social & environmental responsibility at Nationwide, said; "As a mutual building society, we take our environmental responsibility extremely seriously. We are sure that our day of activities will help us raise awareness of the issues and help demonstrate Nationwide's commitment to sustainability. Together, we can all make a real difference and make the world a better place to live in!"
