MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center Receives $2.5 Million Gift, Breaks Ground on The Angelos Center for Lung Diseases

BALTIMORE, MD--(Marketwired - Nov 20, 2013) - From the main lobby of the MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center patient tower today, prominent Maryland attorney and majority owner of the Baltimore Orioles, Peter Angelos, announced a $2.5 million gift to open The Angelos Center for Lung Diseases on the hospital campus this spring. It is the largest philanthropic donation ever bestowed to the hospital in its 115 year history.

Lung cancer remains by far, the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women each year according to data by the American Cancer Society. About 228,190 new cases of lung cancer have already been diagnosed this year.

Through a unique and comprehensive focus on diseases of the lung, including the latest research, technologies, programs and clinical trials, the Angelos Center will provide patients with access to the advanced diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary disease.

"MedStar Franklin Square is committed to improving the health of our patients living and working in our community," said Sam Moskowitz, President of MedStar Franklin Square. "And we are thankful to Mr. Angelos, for putting a focus on all aspects of fighting lung disease. With his support, we can make available the highest standard of care and the most advanced in medical treatment. The goal here is to prevent lung cancer from being the cause of such loss in this community."

The Angelos Center for Lung Diseases at MedStar Franklin Square will provide a unique service for the comprehensive care of patients with lung disease. Through an alliance with the MedStar Cancer Network, which includes the expertise and resources of MedStar Good Samaritan, MedStar Union Memorial and MedStar Harbor Hospitals, patients throughout the region will have accelerated access to new diagnostics and treatments available at the Center.

With a focus on care that is both personalized and specialized, patients will benefit from a wide range of services, from dedicated care navigation to quicker access into the latest clinical trials, as well as ancillary services, including rehabilitation, pain management and nutrition services.

Most importantly, the Center will facilitate the early detection and diagnosis of lung cancer through the introduction of a lung screening clinic. By utilizing advanced CT scanning, in conjunction with state-of-the-art interventional pulmonary diagnostic procedures and the collaboration of a multi-disciplinary team of specialists, the Clinic will enable physicians to diagnose lung cancer in its early stages leading to a better rate of success for treatment.

"MedStar Franklin Square's aim to advance the detection of lung disease and provide quick access to multi-disciplinary diagnosis and treatment, represents an important step forward in the treatment of lung cancer," said William Krimsky, MD, director of Interventional Pulmonology at MedStar Franklin Square.
