BALTIMORE, MD--(Marketwired - Aug 4, 2014) - MedStar Orthopaedic's James E. Wood, Jr., MD, chairman of the department of Orthopaedic Surgery at MedStar Harbor Hospital, will lead a live broadcast of a partial knee replacement surgery, to be streamed on August 4 at 3 p.m. at the 2014 National Medical Association (NMA) Convention and Scientific Assembly in Honolulu, HI.
The procedure will be live-streamed from an operating room inside MedStar Harbor to an audience of more than 2,500 physicians and healthcare professionals from across the country gathered in attendance at the annual convention. Dr. Wood will demonstrate an effective technique for performing a partial knee replacement, to serve as an educational reinforcement for practicing physicians, related health professionals, trainees and residents representing a variety of medical specialties and health professions.
A partial knee replacement, a surgery beneficial to arthritis patients, replaces only a portion of the knee joint. Less invasive than a full knee replacement, the procedure is designed to replace only the portions of the joint that are most damaged by the disease, leaving the rest of the joint intact. Advantages include less blood loss and a smaller incision, resulting in less pain after surgery and a faster recovery.
The National Medical Association is the nation's oldest and largest organization representing African American physicians and health professionals in the United States. The convention, to be held August 2 to 6, offers a unique venue to allow interaction between leading African American physicians, health professionals, academicians and scientists.
