Meebo Turns Six, Reaches Almost Half of U.S. Internet Population

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 15, 2011) - In 2005, three Stanford students -- Seth Sternberg, Sandy Jen and Elaine Wherry -- founded Meebo to connect people across the Web through an instant messaging system. Six years later, Meebo is still bringing people and content they care about together across 8,000 websites and through features like sharing, navigation, chat and its web check-in system.

This week, as the now 200-person company marks its sixth anniversary, it celebrates several notable milestones:

  • Meebo has broadened its audience in two years from almost 14 million unique users to reach nearly half of all U.S. Internet users today (92 million unique users). It has grown by more than 50 percent in the last year alone, reaching approximately 173 million worldwide (source: comScore August & July 2011).
  • In terms of sites that use the Meebo Bar, Meebo's distribution has grown from a single website in 2008 to more than 8,000 today.
  • Revenue has tripled year-over-year.
  • Partnerships with brands have more than doubled each year. Meebo now works with more than 150 advertisers (source: Internal data Q4 2010 - Q3 2011).
