"For many, environmental protection still has a laborious, uncomfortable image, but you can achieve so much by making only a little effort -- and then everyone is prepared to contribute," explained Claudio Trübenbach, the hotel's Chief Engineer.
Trübenbach also discussed how the hotel is dedicated to using energy saving resources throughout the property: "We use almost exclusively energy saving lighting in the hotel. The new lighting concept alone saves more than five percent."
Other measures initiated include the deployment of special, highly efficient combination filters to reduce ozone, particulate matter and allergens -- a move that is a first for the German hotel industry, but especially helpful to those seeking healthy and environmentally-friendly hotel rooms in Berlin. Water conservation at the hotel has been initiated with the installation of water-saving toilets, faucets and shower heads throughout the hotel property.
Environmental awareness is also seen in the hotel's kitchens and restaurants as specialists have developed successful techniques of harmonizing luxury cuisine with recipes for green cuisine. The hotel utilizes regional, seasonal ingredients to avoid the environmental impact of transportation, and many foods are delivered in reusable crates or in large quantities to reduce packaging. Both the hotel's kitchen and catering operations have organic certification and use organic products in the preparation of most dishes.
