Mel Cappe Appointed Chair of the Rx&D Health Research Foundation (HRF)

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Oct. 24, 2014) - On behalf of the Board of Directors of Canada's Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (Rx&D), Chair Mark Lievonen is pleased to announce that Mel Cappe has accepted the position of Chair of the Board of Directors for Rx&D's Health Research Foundation (HRF).

"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mel Cappe as the new Chair of the Rx&D Health Research Foundation," said Mr. Lievonen. "Mr. Cappe's public policy leadership experience will be invaluable to HRF, and he will no doubt excel in advancing the Foundation's support of innovative research that contributes to a sustainable healthcare system in Canada."

Mr. Cappe's accomplishments include serving as the President of the Institute for Research on Public Policy, the High Commissioner for Canada to the United Kingdom, and as the Clerk of the Privy Council, Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of the Public Service. He has a strong interest in healthcare and is a Member of the Board of the Canadian Partnership against Cancer and the Cancer Stem Cell Consortium.

Mr. Cappe succeeds Dr. Philippe Couillard who stepped down as HRF Chair as he pursued the role of Premier of Quebec.

"The HRF does valuable work to advance research that can save the lives of countless Canadians as well as prevent disease," said Mr. Cappe. "I am honoured to serve as Chair of this organization with such an important mandate - one that addresses pressing health issues for all Canadians."

The HRF has also appointed Michel Bilodeau to the Board of Directors to expand the HRF's expertise and outreach into the greater health sector. Mr. Bilodeau is the former CEO of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and held senior management positions in Quebec and Ontario hospitals for more than 30 years.

"Having seen the impact that research plays in the lives of Canadians, I look forward to joining the Board of the HRF to further advance health research in this country," said Mr. Bilodeau.
