Melanie Aitken Appointed to the Competition Bureau Canada

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 5, 2009) - The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Competition Bureau Canada, today announced the appointment of Ms. Melanie Aitken as the Commissioner of Competition for a five-year term.

Ms. Aitken has held a variety of posts at the Bureau, most recently as Interim Commissioner - a post she has held since January 12, 2009. She joined the Competition Bureau in 2005 as Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Competition, Mergers, and was appointed Senior Deputy Commissioner, Mergers, in May 2007. From 2003 to 2005, she was a partner at Bennett Jones LLP. Between 2001 and 2003, she was seconded to the Department of Justice Canada as Senior Counsel. Prior to her secondment, she was a partner at Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP. She worked as an Adjunct Law Professor of Administrative Law with Osgoode Hall Law School from 2003 to 2005, and of Competition Law with Queen's University Law School from 2007 to 2009. She was ranked among the top 100 women in Competition Law in the World by the Global Competition Review in May 2009. In November 2004, she was ranked Top 40 Under 40 in Canada by Lexpert® Magazine. She has been an elected Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada since 2007.
