Dr. Clough Completes Over 50 Patient Cases With the da Vinci Robotics

MILFORD, MA--(Marketwired - Jun 25, 2013) - Melissa (Mead) Clough, M.D., an obstetrics and gynecology physician and surgeon with a private practice in Milford, MA, today announced she has achieved the status of proctor for the da Vinci robotically-assisted surgical system, which qualifies her to train other surgeons on the da Vinci system.

Becoming a proctor means that Dr. Clough has done more procedures using the da Vinci robotics system than other surgeons currently using the system. Also, other surgeons refer patients to Dr. Clough and ask her to help them perform the procedure or teach them how to do the procedure in their own hospitals. Dr. Clough also obtained the recommendation of the area da Vinci clinical representative and demonstrated the surgical proficiency and experience, the successful outcomes, and the communication skills that are necessary for teaching. Proctors observe, evaluate, coach and train other surgeons who are learning da Vinci robotic surgical procedures. 

Dr. Clough is the first robotically trained gynecologic surgeon in the Milford region and among the few surgeons in metrowest Boston who are taking the lead in using the da Vinci robotic technique for surgical procedures. She has conducted over 50 procedures to date with the da Vinci robotic surgical system.

Dr. Clough uses the da Vinci robotic surgical system for several gynecologic procedures, including hysterectomies, endometriosis treatment and ovarian cystectomies. The da Vinci system's 3-D surgical view allows for greater access, precision and control than other minimally invasive approaches, enabling a broader pool of patients, particularly those with complex conditions such as fibroids, obesity or previous surgery, to benefit from minimally-invasive surgery. The da Vinci robotic surgical technique also allows for improved outcomes for patients, such as minimal blood loss and tissue damage, smaller incisions, less scar tissue, decreased length of hospital stay and recovery time, diminished post-operative pain, and a faster return to normal activities. 

An OB-GYN physician and surgeon for 20 years, Dr. Clough received comprehensive training in the da Vinci robotically-assisted surgical system at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Boston, MA. She has also received advanced robotics training at the Florida Hospital Nicholson Center in Celebration, Florida and is preparing to attend a masters' class later this year to further perfect her skills. Dr. Clough performs robotic surgery at both St. Elizabeth's and Milford Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Clough is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a Fellow of The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She earned her medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, MA.
