Member of Parliament Dean Del Mastro Announces Funding to Restore Westwood Cenotaph

NORWOOD, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 1, 2012) - On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Dean Del Mastro, Member of Parliament for Peterborough, today announced a contribution of up to $5,985 to restore the Westwood Cenotaph, which is erected in memory of those who served in the First and Second World Wars.

"It is our sacred duty to remember and honour our Veterans and the brave service men and women who serve Canada so selflessly," said Minister Blaney. "The memorials we restore and build today will forever reflect our nation's gratitude to the generations of Canadians who allow us to live in peace and freedom."

"I commend the Township of Asphodel-Norwood for providing us a place in our community to honour our local heroes," said MP Del Mastro. "Helping community groups restore local memorials is one way our Government is working to ensure young Canadians and their families learn about and remember the achievements and sacrifices of our Veterans."

The Township of Asphodel-Norwood will restore the Westwood Cenotaph by removing the field stones that currently surround the base of the cenotaph, conserving three historic stones for re-use in the new design, re-grading the area around the cenotaph and the walkway to increase the elevation, replacing the existing patio stones with a poured concrete surround and walkway, and adding three concrete steps to the base of the cenotaph. The structure will be cleaned and the lettering will be refurbished.

Funding for this project is provided through the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program. Through this program, the Government of Canada works in partnership with community groups and local organizations to ensure that cenotaphs and monuments honouring our nation's heroes are conserved to the highest standard of care and dignity.

Applications to this program can be submitted at any time during the year and are reviewed on a quarterly basis. Interested non-profit groups and other organizations may be eligible for funding. For more information, please visit www.veterans.gc.ca.
