Member of Parliament Rick Norlock Announces Funding for Alderville Cenotaph

ROSENEATH, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 24, 2012) - On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Rick Norlock, Member of Parliament for Northumberland-Quinte West, today announced a contribution of up to $17,938 to restore the Alderville Cenotaph, which is erected in memory of those from the Alderville Reserve who served during the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War and in Vietnam.

"It is our sacred duty to remember and honour our Veterans and the brave men and women in uniform who serve Canada so selflessly," said Minister Blaney. "Restoring war memorials can inspire a renewed sense of remembrance in a community. This is why our Government is proud to support projects that help honour the sacrifices of our Veterans and our service men and women."

"The Alderville Cenotaph provides a permanent place of remembrance for this community," said Mr. Norlock. "Helping community groups restore local memorials is one way our Government is working to ensure Canadians of all ages learn about the achievements and sacrifices of our Veterans and those who gave their lives."

The Alderville First Nation will restore the Alderville Cenotaph which was built in 1927. Planned restoration work includes cleaning the monument and repairing the cracks; recaulking around all of the plaques; applying two coats of sealant; and replacing the existing fence with a black wrought iron fence.

Funding for this initiative is provided through the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program. Through this program, our Government works in partnership with community groups and local organizations to ensure that cenotaphs and monuments honouring our nation's heroes are conserved to the highest standard of care and dignity.

Applications to this program can be submitted at any time during the year and are reviewed on a quarterly basis. Interested non-profit groups and other organizations may be eligible for funding. For more information, please visit
