Member of Parliament James Bezan Announces Funding to Restore Stony Mountain Cenotaph

STONEWALL, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - July 3, 2012) - On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake, today announced a contribution of up to $15,715 to restore the Stony Mountain Cenotaph, which is erected in memory of the men and women who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War.

"It is our sacred duty to remember and honour our Veterans and the brave service men and women who serve Canada so selflessly," said Minister Blaney. "The memorials we restore and build today will forever reflect our nation's gratitude to the generations of Canadians who allow us to live in peace and freedom."

"I applaud the community members of the Cenotaph Restoration Project Committee in Stonewall for their dedication in providing us a place in our community to honour our local heroes," said MP Bezan. "Helping community groups restore local memorials is one way our Government is working to ensure young Canadians and their families learn about and remember the achievements and sacrifices of our Veterans."

The Cenotaph Restoration Project Committee has recently restored the Stony Mountain Cenotaph that was built in 1924. Restoration work included dismantling the existing cenotaph and plaques, constructing a new base, reconstructing the cenotaph and installing the original plaques.

Funding for this project is provided through the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program. Through this program, the Government of Canada works in partnership with community groups and local organizations to ensure that cenotaphs and monuments honouring our nation's heroes are conserved to the highest standard of care and dignity.

Applications to this program can be submitted at any time during the year and are reviewed on a quarterly basis. Interested non-profit groups and other organizations may be eligible for funding. For more information, please visit
