VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - June 21, 2013) - Wai Young, Member of Parliament for Vancouver South, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Gateway, today presented Mr. Art Childs of North Vancouver with a 2012 Small Craft Harbours Prix d'Excellence.
"Our Government is proud to present Mr. Art Childs with Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Small Craft Harbours Prix d'Excellence for his significant contribution to the False Creek Harbour, his community and the Harbour Authority Association of British Columbia," said MP Young. "Mr. Childs' efforts exemplify the dedication and hard work that the members of Harbour Authorities across Canada demonstrate every day."
Mr. Childs received the Prix d'Excellence under the category of "National Individual Commitment" for his devotion to the success of the False Creek Harbour and active role in the Harbour Authority Association of British Columbia. From 2005 to 2012, Mr. Childs was Manager of the False Creek Harbour Authority. Notably, he was involved in the initiation and management of the Spotted Prawn Festival at False Creek, an annual event that attracts thousands of visitors to the harbour and promotes the local commercial fishing industry. During that period, he also assisted other Harbour Authorities with their projects.
From 2009 to 2012, as President of the Harbour Authority Association of British Columbia, Mr. Childs implemented a number of Harbour Authority support activities, including training and increasing communications among Harbour Authorities in the province. Mr. Childs also served on the Board of the Pacific Coast Congress of Harbour Masters and Port Managers Inc.
"I am very honoured to receive this recognition," said Mr. Childs. "It was a pleasure to be a part of making False Creek Harbour a very good example of the original model of the Small Craft Harbours Program, and help position it as a recognized leader in environmental stewardship. While I have moved on to other endeavours, I wish the Harbour Authority the best of luck in the future."
The Prix d'Excellence is awarded annually to celebrate the exemplary contributions made by Harbour Authorities in meeting the objectives of Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Small Craft Harbours Program. The award recognizes teams and individuals who have made significant contributions to their harbours and their communities.
The Government of Canada remains focused on four priorities, as outlined by the Prime Minister, that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country, and of course, their personal financial security.
