Meridian's New Mobile-Learning Program Puts Learners on the Move

HERNDON, VA--(Marketwire - Apr 30, 2012) - As part of its newly launched "Learner on the Move" program, Meridian Knowledge Solutions, LLC has added learning content management system (LCMS) technology and mobile-learning consulting services to the software maker's Meridian Global Learning Management System (LMS), which is part of a human-capital software platform for delivering online learning and measuring its impact.

"Businesspeople will have a smartphone whether you issue them one or not; our mission, in part, is providing organizations with the consulting, best practices and technology to deliver learning on mobile devices," said John Leh, vice president of sales and marketing for Meridian. "By adding LCMS technology and consulting services to our flagship LMS, Meridian is able to help organizations plan and execute a mobile-learning strategy for the extended enterprise."

Last year, a Nielsen survey showed that smartphones now make up 37 percent of all U.S. mobile phones. A 2011 report from market research firm IHS iSuppli® showed that sales of tablet PCs are consistently chipping away at PC shipments from the likes of Acer, Dell and Hewlett-Packard. Hewlett-Packard's PC shipments were down by 2.1 percent to 15.4 million units compared with 2010. And according to research from Ambient Insight, the five-year compound annual growth rate for mobile learning in the United States is 13.7 percent. The firm also predicts mobile-learning revenues will reach $1.8 billion by 2015.

Meridian's new Learner on the Move program enables organizations to deliver courses that are optimized for mobile browsers and create content tailored to the platform on which a businessperson views it.

"Our Learner on the Move program gives organizations a plan and a platform for viewing and building the services they need to reach a constantly moving workforce," added Vinay Nilakantan, director of product development and research for Meridian. "If you have a library of courses for, say, a laptop, Meridian now offers the services to make these courses equally compelling on a tablet, such as the iPad. If an organization is trying to incorporate social media into its mobile strategy, then we can tailor our services and technology to help create a roadmap for that, too."

Many member-based organizations, such as trade associations and unions, have environments where talent-management professionals cannot control what type of mobile platform learners will choose. Meridian's LMS technology hurdles this problem by automatically tagging what type of content goes to mobile users, based on the learner's mobile platform.

"We want organizations to author content once and deploy it on various platforms, integrated into our LMS," added Nilakantan. "This increases a businessperson's productivity from the standpoint of creating content and taking training.

"Our vision is for learners to download a course from the LMS to their tablet or smartphone prior to, say, taking a flight," Nilakantan said. "They would complete the course en route. Once their flight lands, they could synchronize their iPad or BlackBerry with their organization's Meridian Global LMS."
