Merit Contractors Association: Contractors Group Alleges Alberta Federation of Labour is Violating Election Rules

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 19, 2012) - Alberta's Merit Contractors Association has lodged a complaint with Election's Alberta alleging that the Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) is violating Alberta's election rules with its robocall ad campaign.

In Edmonton, Merit Contractors Association President Stephen Kushner said, "AFL President Gil McGowan is leaving robocall messages attacking the health care policies of the Progressive Conservative and Wildrose Alliance parties. This is clearly political advertising, yet the AFL is not registered as a Third Party Advertiser as required under the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act."

During the 2008 provincial election the Alberta Building Trades Council of construction unions, the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) and the AFL, spent a reported $2.3 million in union dues to run "No Plan" attack ads against the PC party. The Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act was subsequently amended to set financial contribution limits and public reporting standards for third parties engaging in political advertising during provincial elections. Violations are subject to fines of up to $100,000.

Kushner added, "This is yet another example of union leaders spending mandatory union dues on advertising and political agendas that are likely not shared by their members at large. According to a September 2011 survey undertaken by Nanos Research, seventy-three percent (73%)of Canadians, including union members disagreed with union dues being used to contribute to attack ads."

The Merit Contractors Association is registered with Elections Alberta to advertise during the current provincial election.
