Merit Recognizes Top Construction Employees, Apprentices and Employers

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - June 12, 2013) - Merit Contractors Association held its 27th Annual General Meeting and Awards Gala on Tuesday, June 11 at the Royal Glenora Club in Edmonton.

The award ceremony recognizes top construction apprentices, employees and employers within Merit Contractors Association membership. With over 1,300 member companies, the nominations identified an incredible pool of talented individuals and companies in Alberta.

The Willard Kirkpatrick Training Awards were given to companies committed to the promotion of training, and ongoing dedication to providing their employees with access to training opportunities, and the promotion of training within Alberta's construction industry. Three awards (for small, medium and large companies) were handed out.

  • Cana Construction
  • Clark Builders

The gala recognized four top apprentices, one for each period of apprenticeship. Apprentices were nominated by their employers and winners were determined by an independent judging panel. The winners are:

  • First Period: Charlotte Doerksen, Electrician - Muth Electrical Management Inc
  • Second Period: Bryce Finnemore, Machinist - Chris Mechanical
  • Third Period: Jamie Wood, Carpenter - Perma‐Cast Concrete
  • Fourth Period: Christopher Swryd, Electrician - Robart Electrical Services

Construction employees of the year were honored with the Merit‐Royal SunAlliance Awards. These awards celebrate the achievements of construction employees, and their contribution to the industry.

  • Mitchell Falk, Journeyman Carpenter - Clark Builders
  • Justin Kowalevsky, Journerman Electrician - Territorial Electric
  • Kris Banzon, General Foreman - Cana Utilities

Merit's AGM was hosted by the new chairman, Brian Lacey, of Clark Builders, who congratulated all of the winners and nominees for their dedication to the industry. President of Merit Contractors Association, Stephen Kushner, remarked that "These individuals and companies are setting the bar for training, safety and commitment to their industry, and we are happy to recognize their efforts in our field."

The winners will be recognized for a second time today at Merit's AGM Luncheon and Award Gala hosted by Merit's southern Alberta office in Calgary.
