Meritus Health Collaborates With Sg2 for Facility Planning and Care Redesign Project

Expert Clinical Guidance and Advanced Analytics Support New Hospital Opening

SKOKIE, IL--(Marketwire - May 10, 2011) - In anticipation of opening a 297-bed replacement facility in Hagerstown, MD, Meritus Health commissioned Sg2, a health care analytics company, to assist in its state-of-the-art facility planning and comprehensive patient work flow processes to support a safe and seamless transition.

Through analytics and collaborative counsel, Sg2 clinical experts delivered innovative recommendations to ensure safe, high-quality and efficient patient care. This included the evaluation and redefinition of staff roles based on progressive care delivery models.

To anticipate patient volumes and resource needs across the new facility, Sg2 generated a 10-year, disease-based, localized forecast through its Impact of Change® model. The forecast projects demand by Medicare severity diagnosis-related group (MS-DRG), disease, patient type and service area for inpatient and outpatient settings, an industry first. The projections take into account Sg2 proprietary impact factors, including population, innovation and technology, readmissions and health care reform legislation.

By integrating Meritus' patient-level data with Sg2's analytics engine, the in-depth forecast provided a complete picture of future inpatient bed needs and diagnostic technologies across 16 areas, including intensive care, pediatrics, the emergency department, magnetic resonance imaging and interventional suites. With clinically meaningful projections, Meritus senior leadership was able to plan more effectively and strategically regarding bed occupancy, staffing and market share.

From there, the Sg2 team facilitated sessions for developing work flow processes across clinical and support departments that would help refine outcomes in throughput, patient safety, staff productivity and patient satisfaction. This approach identified open-state needs with respect to technology and human capital, and reconciled potential conflicts between departmental handoffs.

"Because of Sg2's thoughtful analysis and expert guidance, opening our new facility was seamless... and their work continues to resonate in our day-to-day operations. For example, Sg2 helped Meritus redesign over 130 care processes across all clinical and support departments in anticipation of the move. And, they provided us with an on-boarding process for new employee training and orientation," said Deborah Addo Samuels, chief operating officer at Meritus Health. "Sg2 clinician experts brought a real-world, best-practices perspective to the table, allowing us to confidently match our services to our new, state-of-the-art facility."

Sg2 Chairman and CEO Michael Sachs said, "Meritus turned to Sg2 as a partner in this large undertaking and we're proud we delivered a sustainable framework that promotes quality patient care and effective processes for its staff. Our advanced analytics and expert intelligence aligns well with its mission -- to create a progressive facility that effectively addresses the needs of the community."
