Merkburn Holdings Wins Hydro Ottawa Award for 'Green' Property Management

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 15, 2008) - Merkburn Holdings, one of Ottawa's most established property managers, was awarded Hydro Ottawa's Companies for Conservation award today for its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Merkburn Holdings oversees the development, leasing and management of close to a million square feet of office space in the nation's capital. The award recognizes the steps the company has taken to decrease energy consumption at several of its properties.

"Merkburn Holdings is truly a local leader when it comes to responsible energy use," says Rosemarie Leclair, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hydro Ottawa Group of Companies. "When a company with such a large portfolio of commercial and industrial properties takes action to make their buildings more energy efficient, it raises the bar for other property management firms as well."

At its Steacie Drive facility, Merkburn Holdings capitalized on Hydro Ottawa's Electricity Retrofit Incentive Program (ERIP) and replaced 228 inefficient light fixtures with new T-8 lighting. The company also made improvements to lighting at its 1600 Liverpool Court property. By replacing high bay lighting with T-5 fixtures, Merkburn Holdings was able to cut their lighting energy use by 50 percent.

"Our company has always placed a firm emphasis on energy conservation," says Peter Dooher, treasurer of Merkburn Holdings Limited. "Increasing our building efficiency is a sound business decision, because it is certainly a selling feature for our tenants, both in terms of lower operating costs and environmental benefits."

"There is a very good business case for getting serious about energy management, and incentive programs like ERIP make it even stronger," says Leclair. "The companies who do take advantage of these programs- like Merkburn Holdings - should be applauded for recognizing the importance of energy conservation."

'Companies for Conservation' is an initiative to celebrate the exciting and innovative conservation projects being undertaken by commercial electricity users in Ottawa. The program, which started in October 2007, recognizes one local company or organization for their conservation leadership every month. These companies are making a difference by embodying a true culture of conservation.
