Merrill Corporation Selects eCopy to Add Paper-Based Information to Litigation Discovery Repository

Merrill Leverages eCopy Open Platform Products to Provide Document Imaging and Distribution Software Standard Across Multiple Digital Copier Brands

MIAMI, FL -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 5, 2005 -- ECOPY PAPER CONNECTION FORUM -- eCopy, Inc., a leading provider of solutions that integrate paper documents into enterprise software applications, today announced Merrill Corporation, a leading global supplier of diversified communications and document services, has selected eCopy to provide document imaging and distribution services for its legal discovery system. eCopy Open Platform software will help Merrill clients improve discovery processes by easily adding paper-based information into their electronic repositories, ensuring a complete case record throughout the litigation cycle.

"eCopy's Open Platform Architecture enables us to support digital copiers from multiple vendors," said Brad Smuland, vice president of information technology for Merrill's Document Management Services business. "Merrill is committed to delivering the best technology available, and eCopy enables us to offer the optimum digital copier for the client's specific situation, while also providing a document imaging and distribution standard that works across a range of platforms."

Merrill has developed an application connector that integrates eCopy ShareScan OP v3.0 software with the Merrill Discovery Navigator®, a Web-based information management system that represents Merrill's next generation in software and services for the legal industry. The Merrill software and service repository provides the ability to search, sort, organize and analyze a discovery database anytime and anywhere. With eCopy, attorneys, legal assistants, and administrative staff can quickly and easily add paper-based information to the repository without requiring specialized, central scanning services.

"A critical component of Merrill's success is our ability to understand and tailor solutions to individual firms, but also different practice areas," said Smuland. "eCopy software provides the flexibility we need to support this strategy without requiring costly programming or customization.

"For example, eCopy supports the leading cost recovery software applications, enabling us to easily incorporate these solutions into our overall solution when the client requires these capabilities. Also, eCopy already works with all the major document management systems, allowing law firms to add paper-based information to their existing case management tools," said Smuland.

Merrill has deployed eCopy software internally to support its own sourcing operations, pulling together vendor and product information, contracts, and price quotes into comprehensive electronic documents that are shared with the field sales force and suppliers. Merrill leverages eCopy's extensive annotation capabilities to highlight information for special emphasis and uses optical character recognition (OCR) to convert paper-based contracts into electronic documents without retyping the document.

"Previously, we would need to e-mail sales documents to the field with up to 20 different attachments, making it a difficult document to manage and read," said Smuland. "eCopy Desktop software allows us to merge paper-based and electronic information into one comprehensive PDF document, making it easier to communicate with the field."

"Merrill's adoption of eCopy software for client solutions and internal use demonstrates the fundamental change taking place in the market -- companies are looking for one document imaging and distribution application that can be applied as a standard across all digital copier and scanner platforms and integrated with any business application," said Tim Corkery, vice president of worldwide sales at eCopy.

Based on eCopy's Open Platform Architecture, eCopy ShareScan OP v3.0 and ScanStation OP v3.0 empower all workers to incorporate paper-based information into any business application using a common interface across scanner and digital copier platforms. eCopy products complement organizations' growing emphasis on information lifecycle management (ILM) and address the challenge of distributing, managing, accessing, and protecting paper-based information.
