Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, on the Death of Richard Bradshaw

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 17, 2007) -

"My husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, and I were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Richard Bradshaw. He was an exceptional ambassador of the arts and culture. His name will forever be associated with the opera, which he ardently promoted.

The Canadian Opera Company (COC), the entire arts and music community, and all music lovers have suffered an enormous loss.

Throughout his brilliant career at the COC, Maestro Bradshaw directed over 60 operas with matchless flair. He was world-renowned for his boldness, his innovative spirit, and the high standard of his productions. His enthusiasm was contagious. Those who enjoyed the great pleasure of his company also know how generously he gave of himself.

The people of Ottawa remember how joyfully he directed Opera Under the Stars on May 29 ... in the pouring rain! At the time, he told me he dreamed of bringing some of the COC's productions to several Canadian cities. He sincerely wished and felt it was important for our great musical companies to tour and be heard across Canada. That shows his tireless visionary spirit. For decades, this extraordinary man never ceased to put everything he had into carrying out major projects.

In 2006, he received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award. That same year saw the culmination of one of the major efforts of his life: the opening of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto on June 11, 2006.

We join Canadians in extending our sincerest condolences and deepest sympathy to Richard Bradshaw's family, friends, and colleagues, and a final Bravissimo Maestro!"
Michaelle Jean
