Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, on the death of Sergeant Jason Boyes

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 17, 2008) -

My husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, and I are deeply saddened to learn that Sergeant Jason Boyes from the Second Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry based out of Shilo, Manitoba, died in Afghanistan, while on patrol.

This is a very painful reminder of the dangers that our fellow countrymen and women in the Canadian Forces face with exemplary courage-ready for the ultimate sacrifice-when they commit to do their very best to help Afghan communities, impoverished and terrorized by years and years of war, and to re-establish the peace and stability to which they aspire so deeply.

Sergeant Boyes had that calibre; he deserves our respect and admiration.

On behalf of all Canadians, we offer our most sincere condolences to his family and to his brothers and sisters in arms who, today, are mourning his loss. We share your grief and honour his memory.

Michaelle Jean
