Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, on the Death of Corporal Michael Starker

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 6, 2008) -

It was with great sorrow that my husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, and I learned of the death of Corporal Michael Starker, of 15 Field Ambulance, in Afghanistan.

During a patrol with Afghan National Security Forces in the Pashmul region,
Cpl Starker's cooperation team had to respond to enemy fire, driving away the insurgents. Unfortunately, Cpl Starker succumbed to injuries sustained in the process. A comrade was injured in the same incident. We wish him a full recovery.

Not a day goes by that you are not in our thoughts. We know the difficult moments you face and the dangerous situations in which you find yourselves. We know what your presence means to the people of Afghanistan. You bring them a sense of security, ease their fears, help them to rebuild their country, give them courage, and bring smiles to the faces of their children. We are extremely proud of you. Never forget that.

All Canadians join me in offering our sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Cpl Starker, a brave man who gave his life to protect the lives of others. We hope that our support for you will help to ease your pain and bring you a small measure of comfort.

Michaelle Jean
