Message from the Governor General of Canada on the Occasion of National Acadian Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 15, 2014) - It gives me great pleasure to celebrate National Acadian Day!

Acadians settled in Canada over 400 years ago. Against all odds, those brave men and women attempted the journey and crossed the ocean in the hopes of building a better life. They have become sources of inspiration, pioneers whose resilience we acknowledge and recognize today. And National Acadian Day is the perfect opportunity for us all to learn more about the Acadia of the past and the present.

Volunteers from Quebec, New Brunswick and Maine (in the United States) have joined efforts and have been personally involved in organizing this fifth annual Congrès mondial acadien, being held until August 24. I would like to congratulate them for this major initiative, which helps to develop and preserve Acadians' language, culture and traditions. Like so many Canadians, I am proud of the role that Acadia plays in our collective heritage.

On this day of exciting festivities, I wish you all a wonderful celebration!
